Certain destinations in India are famous as centres for learning meditation. Dharamshala, a small town in Himachal Pradesh, is one of these destinations where a number of meditation schools have been teaching different types of meditation in their own unique ways. 1/11. Tushita Meditation Center
One of the foremost meditation centers in Dharamsala is Tushita Mediation Center. It has a history dating back to 1972, the year in which it was founded. Lamas Yeshe and Zopa had taken up an old colonial home with the help of some western friends to set up Tushita Retreat Center which is now known as Tushita Meditation Center. The center excels in Tibetan Buddhist meditation of Mahayana tradition.
It offers many courses. There is an introductory course to Buddhism. This is a 10 day course wherein subjects such as Mind and Emotions, Karma, Rebirth, Love and Compassion and Nature of Reality are touched upon. The last two days are spent in intensive meditation. Then there are intermediate and advanced level courses which help learners to take to next levels of guided meditation.
The center also offers meditation retreats for groups of people. These retreats are-Nyung Nay fasting retreat to remove negatives and introduction to 8 percepts of Mahayana Buddhism, Vajra Sattva to purify negative mental imprints, Medicine Buddha Sadhana for meditation and mantra chanting to remove illnesses, Green Tara Sadhana and Chenrezig Tong-Len yoga retreats.
Besides these retreats, there are drop-in sessions for daily guided meditations, puja performance, library is accessed and movie days are observed.
All of these are residential courses and you will be provided meals and accommodation during the course period.

2/11. Himachal Vipassana Center Dhamma Sikhara
This center teaches the Vipassana meditation on the lines of Shri S N Goenka as taught by Sayagyi U Ba Khin. The techinques of this style of meditation can be learnt by joining the 10 days courses offered by this meditation center in Dharamsala. The center is situated in 3 acres of land area with cedar deodar forests.
The courses are conducted both inside the center and outdoors, in retreat centers such as campgrounds, churches and other religious places. The 10-day courses are introductory in nature. Only after completion of these is a person eligible for higher level course of Satipatthana Sutta.

3/11. Z Meditation
Z Meditation was established in 1997 by Ajay and Suruchi in Dharamsala after having practiced meditation on lines of Ramakrishna Mission. Till 2001, there were changes to the course structure after which it was stabilized. The center teaches how to concentrate on Deep Inquiry and Radiant Mantras to bring changes to the mental health of the students. The selection of the students is based on the meditation exercises given to them at the time of joining the classes. Only those who are able to pass this exercise are taken in for the courses.
The center prescribes a Simple Awareness Exercise. After this, the Z Meditation Retreats are organized. These is the time to practice deconditioning of mind of useless thoughts. The purpose of these retreats is to elevate the mind gradually to the level of unconditional love and peace. There are five principles of Z Meditation-

4/11. Buddha Hall
Buddha Hall is a famous meditation center in Dharamsala which also offers courses in different alternative healing practices. The center has been established by Usha Dobhal in 1997 with the aim to provide alternative healing to people suffering from different diseases and to spread the knowledge of wellness to among the people. It was set up to bring together science, psychology, philosophy and spirituality to provide holistic healing to persons. The center provides both residential and non-residential courses.

Meditation is all about immersing one’s consciousness into infinite Divine. Yoga and pranayama prepare the body and mind for the practice of meditation. Meditation not only brings peace to us but also boosts immune system to help it fight the diseases. Sarvaguna yoga in Dharamshala offers teacher training courses in different disciplines. Among these is the teacher training course in meditation. Meditation is generally practiced in different way, but the aim is to calm down the mind, focus on the inner self and get on to the path of spiritual connect.

7/11. Osho Nisarga
The Osho Nisarga center for meditation in Dharamsala is based on the principles and practices propounded by Osho Rajneesh, the Spiritual Master who elevated ‘dhyaan’ to a new status altogether. The center provides daily meditations and meditative therapies.
The Daily Meditations include the Dynamic Meditation, Dance Meditation, Kundalini Meditation and Evening meeting or satsang.
The Meditative therapies include Mystic Rose, Born Again, No Mind and Talking to your Body Mind.
Mystic Rose meditation is a three week program wherein first week is dedicated to laughing meditation, second week to crying meditation and third week to silently watching and meditating.
Born Again meditation is a two hour per day course for a period of minimum 7 days. The first hour is dedicated to behaving as a child (imagining you were born again as a child), such as being in the present and even playing and the second hour is to remain silent.

8/11. Sahaja Yoga
Sahaja Yoga is a method of meditation which begins with a self-realization. The method of meditation and the organization of same name was established by Mataji Nirmala Devi in 1970. As per her experience, using Sahaj yoga meditation a person becomes moral, united, integrated and balanced. One self-realization, the person bathes in peace and becomes joyous.
Sahaj Yoga seeks to establish that the connection with the Divine Love is neither religious nor mental. It is an awareness which develops into higher state of consciousness. Chakra meditation and Kundalini awakening is used as a tool for reaching this higher state of consciousness.

9/11. Brahma Kumaris
Brahma Kumaris is a renowned non-profit organization devoted to meditation and spirituality. It was set up by the name of ‘Om Mandali’ by Dada Lekhraj in 1937 in the city of Hyderabad in Pakistan. He was an affluent jeweler who began to be called Prajapita Brahma. The Brahmakumaris offers four fold experiences to whoever joins it. These are spiritual knowledge, raja yoga meditation, conscious assimilation of virtues and service to others.
The Raja Yoga meditation courses are conducted at the Dharamsala center of the organization. These include the five steps of relaxation, concentration, contemplation, realization and meditation. The center has also come up with a course on ‘Meditate in a Minute’, also called ‘just-a-minute’ or only ‘j-a-m’. This has also been made into a mobile app which can be download for facilitating one-minute meditation as and when required.

The Art of Living center in Dharamsala is one of the many existing around the world, including India. The Art of Living Foundation was set up by Sri Sri Ravi Shakar whose Sudharshan Kriya breathing technique made world-wide fame. The center provides classes in yoga, meditation and performs many social activities.
The center offers Sahaj Samadhi Meditation and Art of Silence Meditation Retreat. The Sahaj Samadhi Meditation technique is based on mantra chanting which lets go of tensions and stresses and allows the mind to settle down. Mantra Yoga and Meditation is a center dedicated to providing learning in yoga and meditation. It offers retreats and teacher training courses in meditation. The courses are designed for beginners to meditation as well as advanced practitioners.
