Meditation controls stress; helps in weight loss

Mediation is known to help people control stress thereby lose weight naturally.

Reasons for weight-gain are not just limited to eating disorders. In fact, lingering stress  is the primary psychosomatic reason for around 80% of non medical weight gain.

When we are under stress, most of us become sedentary; stop exercising, we start consuming more calories.  Science acknowledges it as cortisol driven motivation to eat ‘comfort eating’, ‘binge eating’ or ‘emotional eating’. It is a vicious circle that begins with stress, followed by eating disorders resulting in weight issues and the circle comes back with more stress about shedding the extra kilos.

“People often put on weight from trying to comfort themselves with food”… says Adam Perlman, MD, executive director of Duke Integrative Medicine.

Any condition that’s caused or worsened by stress can be alleviated through meditation… says cardiologist Herbert Benson, founder of the Mind/Body Institute at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

UC San Francisco conducted a study by dividing around 47 overweight women in two groups. Both the groups were given basic knowledge of diet and exercise while one of the groups received sessions on ‘mindful eating’ and stress management through regular meditation. At the end of the study, it was found that the weight of the women in the latter group was maintained.

Yes! Meditation will not cause direct weight loss but the effect it has on stress, binge eating, cortisol and metabolism triggers a systemic and psychosomatic shift…

Mediation can help to lose weight naturally!
