Sound Healing Centres, Courses and Therapies in Rishikesh
That sound has healing properties is not a new discovery and the western scientific community also supporting this discovery helps take away the layered secrecy from this beautiful science.
Interestingly, the healing effects of sounds were known to ancient civilisations, including that of India. The ancient sages and yogis chanted different types of mantras and performed ‘satsang’, ‘kirtan’ and ‘aartis’. Even the Indian classical music also augurs good for sound healing purposes. The Nada Yoga of ancient Indian wellness therapy was a well-developed science. The Buddhist monks of Tibet have long used Tibetan Singing Bowls and other tools for producing sonic vibrations for unity of mind, body and soul. Rishikesh, the Yoga capital of the world, has many centres offering courses in these sound healing therapies or treatments.
Scientific basis of Sound Healing and waves…
Sound healing is based on the scientific principle that our bodies have energy frequencies with which the sound frequencies can be attuned. This attunement enables the body to heal itself. It brings relaxation, peace of mind, freshness, rejuvenation and positive emotions to our being. In fact, there is a separate branch of scientific study of sound as a healing therapy. This is called psychoacoustics.
It is well-known that the core of our emotions, thoughts and behaviours are neurones. When neurones interact with one another, a brain wave are generated. These waves operate in five basic frequency bands.
The slowest waves are Delta waves (0.5 Hz to 3 Hz) and these are produced when in deep state of sleep. Theta waves (3 Hz to 8 Hz) are produced in sleep or deep meditation.
Alpha waves (8 Hz to 12 Hz) are generated when one is in state of mindfulness meditation. Mental health can be improved by listening to sounds produced in this range. Classical music and Tibetan singing bowls produce these frequencies.
Beta Waves (12 Hz to 30 Hz) are produced when mind-related works are being done which require high levels of concentration. Fastest frequency waves are Gamma waves (25 Hz to 100 Hz) originate in highest state of conscious realm.
By using these different methods of producing sound at different frequencies, the brain waves can be activated to induce relaxation, altered states of consciousness, change moods and be more insightful. Thus, sound healing can be used for treating sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, stress and even in management of pain. To know about the connect between Yoga and Brain waves…
