Mysore Yoga Classes & Centres, Teacher Training Courses (TTCs) and Yoga Schools

Mysore is a city situated in the foothills of Chamundi Hills in Karnataka. It is known for its heritage structures and grand palaces. It also attracts people from far and wide due to the culture of yoga which is deeply ingrained in the people here. Mysore is the home of Ashtanga Yoga style, which is a style based on traditional Patanjali Yoga sutra. It was first given by Shri K.Pattabhi Jois in 1930s and since then it has been learnt by millions of people around the world.

Mysore now has many centers offering various courses in yoga and allied disciplines, such as meditation, Ayurveda, pranayama and others. Many of these centers offer regular classes, teacher training courses (TTCs) which aim to make you a certified trainer of Yoga and even online classes. Classes for beginners and for advanced learners are also provided by the yoga ashrams in Mysore. These classes are held essentially in Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa, Pranayama, Meditation and mantra chanting. Anatomy and physiology of body and philosophy of yoga is also taught in these schools.

Some of the famous yoga centers of Mysore are listed below…

It was Shri K. Pattabhi Jois (popularly called by acronym of the name, KPJ) who laid the foundation of the Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore and made it famous worldwide. Ashtanga yoga style was given by KPJ in 1930s wherein physical movements and breathing were central to the practice of yoga. The intensity of the workout during the Ashtanga classes, especially the great importance attached to breathing is the hallmark of this style.

The KPJAYI is a premier institute offering a 3-month course of study and there has to be a gap of about six months before again joining the class there. This is not a residential program and the accommodation has to be arranged on own. This can be easily done in the neighbourhood.

Ashtanga means ‘eight limbs’. These are the limbs of yoga-Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. The practice of asanas is central to doing Ashtanga yoga as it sets the tone for others to follow.

At present, the Institute is run by Saraswati Jois, the sister of KPJ and Sharath, the grandson.

20/20. Atmavikas Centre of Yogic Sciences

Atmavikas Yoga is a brainchild of husband-wife duo of Yogacharya Venkatesh and Acharye Hema. Both of them gracefully declined the Yoga Alliance designation of Senior Yoga Teachers (SYT) and humbly chose to remain without these titles.

The mission of the center is to keep yoga pure. Interestingly, instead of getting the posture right, the focus of this center is to let your body reach excellence on its own. The only thing which the center does is to adjust mind to be able to do so and overcome fear. This approach makes it fundamentally different from the others which focus on getting the postures right.

This yoga school claims to have many firsts to its name in Mysore. It claims to be the First Classical Hatha Yoga School in Mysore, first international school to offer full range of yogic sciences including bandhas, Sanskrit, chanting and sutras, first to introduce TTC and Yoga Therapist Training program and many others.

Some of its trainings are- Back-bending Intensive Fusion Program, Atmavikas Yoga Therapy Training, Teacher’s Masters Education and Atmavikas Traditional Hatha Yoga Immersions for Self-development.
